There is no denying that the principal and superintendent are the most influential leaders in a school system. When we think of the traits of an effective leader we generally include attributes such as integrity, self-confidence, ethical and moral character, strategic thinking, and having effective communication skills. However, there are a few other characteristics that are “must haves” for successful leadership of a literacy initiative. The workshop will include a glimpse into the day in the life of balanced literacy in the classroom. What it looks like and feels like for the student and the teacher. The participants will learn how to set the direction, the components of an effective literacy initiative, and how creating school improvement plans support the implementation of a balanced literacy framework.
