Course description: This 5 PLU course explores theories of language acquisition, with a focus on the nature and development of first and second language, the elements of linguistics, language varieties, the influences on the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of English as an additional language across age levels, and linguistically responsive instructional strategies.
Course Goals:
- to understand and analyze the nature and structure of language
- to understand and apply theories and research in the field of linguistics to support the English development and academic achievement of ELs
- to understand and analyze the processes of and relationships between language acquisition, instruction, assessment, and school achievement
- to gather and evaluate student linguistic development and to utilize this information to plan instruction
This is the first of three courses required to complete the ESOL endorsement.
